Carol,
The CAQDAs Networking Project, based at the University of Surrey runs
introductions to qualitative software generally - either in the two day
format - (at Easter each year) or in the one day format at other times.
Fairly regular events - 2in 1 days -
where we introduce 2 software packages in a day
last time it was NUDIST and Atlas -
For our next event I am waiting to see a shape emerging in demand - before
deciding which two softwares to introduce - the date of this event is
September 23 1998.
The choice - is likely to be between - NUDIST version 4, ATLAS/ti, WINMAX,
Code-A-Text, and The Ethnograph - if Version 5 is out by then.
But all these software's will be covered in one form of training event - or
another at some point in the next few months.
Also listed are provisional events which are waiting for a date!
This project runs a fluid programme of events - based on a mixture of demand
and our basic rationale which is about helping to make the choice of
package, a more informed one.
I append our current list of events.

Institute of Social Research: CAQDAS NETWORKING PROJECT
University of Surrey
Software for Qualitative Data Analysis:
24 June 1998 11am - 4pm : 'Early Use of Nud*ist' Clinic:-, part demo, part
hands-on workshop, part seminar format - for project specific planning:
To make the best use of QSR NUD*IST Version 4 requires a significant early
input/intake of information. This course is designed for a limited number of
potential users who have the time to provide themselves with early data
preparation ideas - and also to gain some early insight to maximising
advanced uses of the software.
Course Format:
The event incorporates introductory presentation and demonstration of
software - incorporating data preparation issues (for NUD*IST), index
system structure, and focus will then move to seminar format with a limited
number of participants discussing own data preparation issues with the
tutor, and advance thinking about Index/ coding related tools, 'creating an
index system structure which helps rather than hinders'.
There will be some hands-on exercises - but this is not the main emphasis of
the day.
A pre-event discussion with tutor concerning project, data, research focus
etc., would be useful.
July/August 1998
Apart from events already scheduled see below, in July and August there are
likely to be overspill days held for Atlas/ti and NUD*IST - depending on demand.
15 July 1998 Atlas/ti 4.1 or later, Introductory Hands-on workshop :
Intensive one day workshop - aimed at making the participant comfortable
with processes of preparing data, creating a project in the software,
coding, memoing, mapping, and generally organising their work around a
particular thematic area using a sample dataset.
23 Sept 1998 2 in 1 Software Introduction : 2 software packages for
qualitative data analysis will be covered. More details forthcoming
30 Sept 1998 QSR NUD*IST V4 1-day Intensive workshop
7 Oct 1998 An introduction to QSR NUD*IST and Decision Explorer:
How might work in one software package be usefully exported to the other? (
a CAQDAS Networking Project course, organised with co-operation and
assistance from Banxia Software)
Date to be announced: Ethnograph V 5 for Windows Introductory workshop
(provisional pending official release)
Also to be announced: Seminar/demonstration format Introduction to Code-A-Text,
by Alan Cartwright - likely to be in Autumn Term.

An ongoing programme of 1 day workshops will take place throughout 1998 at the
University of Surrey. These will mostly occur on Wednesdays. Overflow
events will be arranged where there is a significant waiting list. Fee
structure for one day events includes a limited number of free/reduced
places for postgraduate students.
'Project-specific' or events restricted to particular groups can also be
organised and held here at Surrey. Since these will allow administrative
savings to be made, lower fees can be negotiated.
All events are held at University of Surrey, GUILDFORD UK, unless otherwise
stated or requested.
