ELECTRONIC DATA SECURITY FOR LIBRARIES : Call for papers
VINE, published quarterly by the Library Information Technology Centre
(LITC) in London, is Europe's premier journal for library systems
professionals, providing timely and definitive overviews of the
hottest topics in the field. VINE's intention is to publish
informative, well-researched writing that will be of immediate
practical use to its busy, influential readership.
For a forthcoming special issue of VINE, authors are invited to
submit short papers (2000-3000 words) on any aspect of the provision
of secure networked access to electronic information sources by
European libraries and information services.
Here, 'electronic information sources' is intended to cover: OPACs;
networked CD-ROMs; bibliographic, full-text and multimedia databases;
electronic journals, newspapers and newsletters; Web pages; FTP
archives; and any other stores of digital information to which
networked access is provided by libraries or information services.
Potential themes for papers include:
o user authentication: ID and password administration;
IP address filtering; cryptographic certificates
o user authorisation: access to confidential or sensitive
information; Internet access management systems; filtering software;
acceptable use policies
o LAN/Intranet protection: routers, firewalls, network monitoring
tools; anti-viral solutions
o data integrity: server, document and code authentication;
encryption, hashing, digital time-stamping, digital signatures,
digital image watermarking; metadata, PICS, RDF
o preservation of digital archives.
Possible approaches include:
o product-specific reviews
o site-specific reports of innovative installations by individual
libraries or information services
o overviews of funded research projects
o reviews of emerging national or international standards
o reviews of policies adopted by individual or collaborating
institutions
o general surveys of tools, techniques and technologies
for guaranteeing secure access to electronic information sources.
In the first instance, please send a brief abstract (150 words) of
your proposed paper to the guest editor, Jonathan Furner (email:

will be notified by MONDAY 20 JULY. The deadline for receipt of full
papers will be MONDAY 17 AUGUST, for publication in Autumn 1998.
