                               Videoconferencing

                         THE WAY FORWARD

                                  Organised by
                                     JTAP
                                    and the
    United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association
    (UKERNA)

                                15th July 1998

                         Royal Geographical Society, London
                     (with The Institute of British Geographers)

The use of videoconferencing in further and higher education is
growing, mainly due to the fact that it is an application that has
enormous potential in education and training. It can be used to
support many of the basic educational functions, facilitating
inter-personal communication, collaborative working and engaging new
communities in distance learning. The medium is also enabling
increased collaboration with industry and commerce, both in the UK and
worldwide. Many academic staff now need to know how videoconferencing
may work effectively for them and seek advice on the basics of
videoconference service development and provision.

Aims of the Event
=================

This event is intended to provide information for those who would like
to learn about the use of videoconferencing in further and higher
education and get basic guidance on how to get started. Illustrated
by actual user experiences, this one day event will explore the
potential of videoconferencing in teaching and learning. It will
highlight key issues in service planning and provision and provide an
informative guide to system selection. There will be an opportunity
to exchange knowledge and experience with those who have been involved
in the development and implementation of videoconferencing services.
An exhibition will also be held in which a selection of
videoconferencing products will be available for display and
demonstration.

Who Should Attend?
===================

The day is aimed at UK educational and research bodies. It would be
of interest to teaching staff, administrators, technical and research
staff who are interested in starting to use videoconferencing for
teaching and learning and also to those who have been charged with
implementing videoconferencing within their institution.

Venue
=====

The event will take place at the Royal Geographical Society (with The
Institute of British Geographers), London.
