I thought this was interesting alongside the discussion of endnote a
while ago.

BLUE ANGEL TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES METADOOR; ADVANCED INFORMATION
RETRIEVAL VIA INTERNET
Enables real-time, simultaneous searching of Internet databases from
within Microsoft Word, Excel, and other desktop applications
NEW ORLEANS, June 3, 1998 -- Imagine being able to access information
from the Internet without having to launch a browser, or access a search
engine. Imagine being to able search hundreds of online databases
worldwide at the same time, getting back only the precise information
you've requested, instead of hundreds of unrelated links. Imagine
asking for that information from a Microsoft Word document, or Excel
spreadsheet, and having it imported directly into those documents.
Imagine no more. The technology to enable these seemingly impossible
tasks is here.
Blue Angel Technologies, Inc. announced today the availability of
MetaDoor(tm), its Z39.50-compliant OLE DB provider, which uses Microsoft
technology to deliver information directly from Internet servers around
the world to local desktop applications.
The announcement was made today at the Microsoft Tech Ed show, being
held at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
"MetaDoor achieves a true, seamless integration between desktop and
Internet technologies," said Blue Angel president Jim Restivo.
"Developers can use MetaDoor to build applications which retrieve
information from standards-compliant servers anywhere on the Internet.
The information can then be imported directly into a user's desktop
applications," Restivo added.
MetaDoor incorporates Z39.50, an ANSI/NISO international search and
retrieval protocol. This is particularly important for large
enterprises with the need to retrieve information in cross-platform
environments. The use of the Z39.50 protocol allows them to leverage
and extend their investment in legacy hardware.
"MetaDoor opens up a world of opportunities," commented Restivo. "For
example, developers can write applications that allow people to get
information published during the last six months by a particular author,
on a specific topic, and add it directly to their open Word document.
Or, a marketing manager will be able to request demographic information
for a particular region from within an Excel spreadsheet and have the
results added to the spreadsheet for analysis," continued Restivo.
"Microsoft is excited about Blue Angel's work on MetaDoor," said Stephen
Rauch, Microsoft Group Program Manager, Middle-tier Evangelism. "Access
to mission-critical information is becoming more important by the day.
With MetaDoor, developers and users will be able to incorporate data
from a wide variety of resources using a standard interface - ADO and
OLE DB," Rauch added.
Blue Angel will use MetaDoor as a platform for building an upcoming
suite of user applications. MetaDoor will be available to developers on
June 15, 1998 through the Blue Angel website (www.bluangel.com).
