I think the HTML formatting could be improved in the
user guide <http://128.253.70.110/DC5/UserGuide5.html>.
It would be better to use the Heading tags instead of simple
<b>. I would use one H1 tag on the main title, H2 on headings
like "1. INTRODUCTION", and H3 on headings like
"1.1. What is metadata?". This would make it look more like
the majority of other web pages, and therefore easier to read.
I would also put all long examples into <PRE> blocks, and use
<SAMP> for inline examples, again because that is the usual
convention. See, for example, <http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Guide/>,
(except that does not use <samp>!). This idea is more a matter
of preference: I like it, but many pages don't bother, and tend
to use quotation marks or bold instead of <SAMP> (see for example
<http://altavista.digital.com/av/content/help.htm>).
I raised this point on the User Guide mailing list before, but
there was no response (either for or against) so I am now sending
this mail to the wider audience on the meta2 list: perhaps someone
can volunteer to fix it up. Sorry I don't have time myself.
