4 ESRC Collaborative PhD Studentships
Centre for Urban & Regional Development Studies
The Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) has 3
Economic and Social Research Council Collaborative PhD studentships
available from September 1998. The Centre was awarded a grade 5 in
the last Research Assessment Exercise, and is internationally renowned
for applied and conceptual research on urban and regional development.
(1) Reinventing Government : Organisational and Technological Change
in the Civil Service
This studentship examines the impact of organisational and
technological change in the Civil Service on employees, and the
implications of change for the delivery of services to citizens and
businesses. The research is organised jointly with the Public and
Commercial Services Union.
The ESRC maintenance grant, which is currently, (97/98)stlg5,295pa will
be supplemented by a payment of stlg1,325pa.
(2) Innovation and Changing Skills Needs of the Electronics Industry
The studentship will examine how the growth, change and technological
upgrading of the electronics industry in the North East of England is
affecting demand levels and the specific forms of skill required.
This research is undertaken jointly with the North East
Microelectronics Institute.
The ESRC maintenance grant, which is currently, (97/98) stlg5,295pa will
be supplemented by a payment of stlg1,325pa.
(3) Raising Research and Development Capacity in Small and Medium
Sized Enterprises (SMEs) located in the Northern Region of England
The project involves collaboration with the Regional Technology Centre
North and Newcastle School of Management. This research explores the
extent, nature and direction of R&D efforts undertaken in
manufacturing SMEs located in the Northern Region of England and their
relationship to innovative/economic success. The research will also
assess the contribution of public or private sector support for
innovation in SMEs.
The current ESRC maintenance grant of stlg5,295pa (97/98) will be
supplemented by an award of between stlg1,325 and stlg3,695pa depending upon
qualifications and experience.
Closing date for applications Friday 26th June.
Applicants should have, or expect to have by September 1998, at least
a 2.1 honours degree in a related subject. A Masters degree or
relevant work experience would be an advantage. Application forms and

Department of Politics
The Department of Politics offers an Economic and Social Research
Council Collaborative PhD Studentship from September 1998. The
Department is one of the largest centres for graduate work in politics
in Britain, and offers an outstanding environment in which to do
research. It was awarded a grade 4 in the last Research Assessment
Exercise, and offers particular research strength in the field of
public policy.
Public Policy and Regional Economic Regeneration: Politics for
technology transfer and industrial innovation, with particular
reference to West Cumbria.
The studentship will involve collaboration with The West Cumbria
Development Fund, a company established to promote regeneration of the
West Cumbrian economy.
The normal ESRC maintenance grant which is currently stlg5,295pa (97/98)
will be supplemented by an award of at least stlg1,325pa.
Closing date for applications is Friday 26th June.
Candidates are expected to hold a good first degree. An MA, relevant
research or industrial experience would be an advantage.
