Oxygen has to be prescribed by the physician. Assuming this is done, the
role of titrating oxygen can be done by RN, PT or RT but once again this
has to be " approved " by the physician. Depending on your practice, if
you mobilize a patient and notice that a patient is desaturating, you
can titrate oxgen. As ageneral rule the Spo2 is maintained > 92%.
However there are exceptions to this rule and I would state that
communication( to the patient, MD, RN and RT ) is a key factor- whether
it is to convey that the patient needs greater supplemental oxygen for
activity or to establish a safe cutoff limit.
I have found this method very effective.
