(Please forward to anyone you think may be interested)
On-line Systems Programmer Post
Computer Officer staff £17,985 - £23,241 per annum.
The Data Archive, located at the University of Essex, is a national
resource centre for computer readable data, disseminating data throughout
the United Kingdom and internationally. Founded in 1967, it now houses
approximately seven thousand datasets of interest to researchers in all
sectors and from many different disciplines.
We require an on-line systems programmer to work in both the History
Data Service (HDS), and the NESSTAR project. The successful candidate
would report to The Data Archive Systems Analyst with direct working
responsibilities to the History Data Service and the NESSTAR project.
The HDS, the national centre for computer-readable historical data, aims
to improve access to its collection. It is looking for a programmer to
implement on-line systems to support this aim, and to prepare data for
inclusion. In addition the postholder will maintain the HDS website and
provide technical assistance and expertise for the HDS when required.
The NESSTAR project is an EC funded project to improve access to major
data sets for academics and researchers across Europe. The project is a
leading player in the future of social science dataset provision. It is a
two-year project with eight European partners and an agenda to provide a
Web based browsing, downloading and sub-setting tool for data. The post
would require the programmer to prepare and maintain metadata loaders for
existing data and work on the Web presentation of data. The successful
candidate would be working in international teams of programmers, and
would have to travel within Europe. This is a good opportunity to work on
the development of innovative and challenging data standards and display
systems.
To be considered for this post you will need good programming and problem
solving skills, and are likely to have experience or knowledge of NT,
UNIX, HTML, JAVA and Web based systems and databases. In additions SGML /
XML experience would be a strong benefit.
If you can adhere to tight deadlines, are flexible, and like to work in a
small multi-disciplinary team, this is an excellent opportunity to employ
and increase your professional skills.
Initially the post would be for a period of 18 months with a possibility
of renewal or extension of the contract.
Appointment to this post will be until 31 December 1999, on the Grade 2
scale for Computer Officer staff £17,985 - £23,241 per annum.
