The Gateway to Educational Materials is a US National Library of
Education (NLE) initiative to improve the organization and accessibility of
the substantial, but uncataloged, collections of materials which are
already available on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and
commercial Internet sites. The NLE and the U.S. Department of
Education are supporting a consortium effort to create an operational
framework to provide America's teachers with "one-stop, any-stop"
access to Internet-based educational resources.
On May 15, 1998 the beta version of The Gateway was launched. The Gateway
currently links to over 1300 resources on 12 Internet sites.
SCRAN has made a link to The Gateway from the SCRAN Links Pages under
"Other Subject Gateways", or the url is
http://www.thegateway.org/
Users may conduct full-text, subject, keyword, or title searches, then
select desired grade or education level and submit the search. Retrieved
records will link directly to the Internet resources they describe.
