Hi Chris
I understand that Bangor University and the OU are the JISC reps on IMS.
I've been given Oleg Liber - [log in to unmask] - as a contact (I haven't
spoken to him though).
I discussed IMS with Stuart Sutton, Syracuse University New York at the
WWW 7 conference. Stuart gave a short paper at the conference on "Gateway
to Educational Materials (GEM):metadata for networked information discovery
and retrieval". We discussed Dublin Core at the conference dinner. His
paper which covers DC and Educational metadata standards is available at
<URL: http://www7.conf.au/programme/posters/1897/com1897.htm>
We also discussed IMS. There was a feeling that we (UK HE and US
universities) should get involved - but we needed to know a lot more. I
think this fits in with the points you've raised.

>I have just come from a meeting today about the JTAP programme, where

>"The IMS project has undertaken a broad scope of work. Building out from

>management systems and from the requirement for working within complex
>educational enterprises, we have identified five main areas in which we
>are developing specifications and building prototype code:
>
>"* Meta-data, the labeling of educational materials
>
>"* Content, the actions and responses that IMS-compliant content may
>perform
>
>"* Management functions such as access control, session management,
>tracking students' progress through learning processes, control over the
>virtual learning environment, and security.
>
>"* Profiles of students and instructors that include personal,
>performance, and preference information.
>
>"* External Interfaces to services external to the core management system
>such as electronic commerce, backoffice, full-text indexing systems,
>digital library services, and databases."
