Briefly, on Gardens...
David Gilbert is too modest. Felix and David's paper, titled 'Heart of Empire?'
in Soc n Space, 1998, pp 11-28 is very suggestve around issues of
suburbanisation and imperialism (including a reference to Rebecca's work on p
23).
(Sorry, I'm just this minute reading it!)
While we're advertising the work of others, there was a research fellow (sic) at
the OU called Mandy Morris, whose PhD was on the social history and geography of
gardening (1994, Title: Home and Garden: Landscape and Gender in English
Culture, 1880-1930). She has published papers in Ecumene and Soc n Space (if
memory serves). The Soc n Space paper was published in 1996, pp 59-78.
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't paradise a walled garden? Something for us
critical geographers to think about... or not.
Happy digging,
Steve
