Here where I live (Durham/Northumbria border), 'yard' refers to the walled
and usually paved space at the back of a house (terraced or otherwise), and
'garden' refers to a place for growing things, whether it be a place
physically connected to the house, or an allotment. Thus many people have
'gardens' even if they are some way from their house.
