AAG 1999: "GEOGRAPHY'S MASCULINITIES" -- CALL FOR PAPERS
I am writing to call for paper proposals for a special session concerned with examining the relationship between masculinities, power and Geography, to be held at the Annual Meetings of the Association of American Geographers, 24-27 March in Honolulu, Hawaii.
For more than a quarter century now, feminist geographers have explicated the complex gendered geographies of everyday life in places around the world. Much of this work has focussed on making explicit the spaces that are constituted by gendered practices. Building on such critical work, this special session focuses upon one particular aspect of gendered practice, the masculine spaces of Geography itself. The session will thus be of particular interest to those scholars who wish to explore the multiple ways that Geography, as a disciplinary practice, is differentially gendered and spatially differentiated.
Potential themes for papers include (but would not be limited to):
€ Ambivalence, feminism and Geography
€ Masculinities and fieldwork in Geography
€ Masculinities and pedagogies in Geography
€ Masculinities and anti-feminist backlash in Geography
€ Problematic positions, 'feminist' men and Geography
€ Subordinate masculinities, subordinate Geographies
€ The geographies of (masculine) Geography
Anyone interested in participating, obtaining further information, or contributing further ideas to the organisation of this special session should contact Lawrence Berg ([log in to unmask]), School of Global Studies, Massey University, New Zealand.
Those who wish to participate will need to provide the following information to me by JULY 15:
YOUR NAME
YOUR AFFILIATION
YOUR PROPOSED PAPER TITLE
While I know it is difficult at this early stage, if you are able to provide a brief 25 - 50 word description of the presentation, that would be very helpful.
More information on the conference is available at http://www.aag.org.
