As with all other aspects of treatment with IC, the available
evidence is scarce, inconclusive and largely anecdotal. The only
article that I am aware of looking at swelling in particular is :
Christie A.D. and Willoughby G.L. (1990) The Effect of Interferential
Therapy on Swelling Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of
Ankle Fractures. Physiotherapy Theory and Practice, 6, 3-7.
This only looked at short-term treatment (20min, x1/day for 2-4 days)
post surgery prior to casting. They found no difference in rate of
swelling reduction or in total swelling reduction between placebo and
control groups (n=12 in each group).
