London, Edinburgh & Plymouth
-------------------------------------------
Hello,
I wonder if someone could recommend a book / article /
etc. on the relationship between architecture( / urban design) and
society ( / power relations) in relation to London, from
mid-nineteenth century onwards...(Preferably to start with, but not
necessarily.) I'll be most grateful, really! Something similar to
Cosgrove's gripping account of the 'battle' over architectural design
in seventeenth, eighteenth & early nineteenth c. London in his
_Social Formation_, or to Nan Ellin's synthesis of postmodern
urbanism, only concentrating on late-19th/early-20th/late-20th London
in particular -- would there be something, somewhere? And -- has
someone heard of the (apparently either very new or very bad, since
it's not in the Leeds library) book _Architecture and Order_, by M.P.
Pearson and Collin Richards ? Could it be of any use?
Secondly, I'd like to ask those of you who're from Edinburgh or
Plymouth: Is it possible to gain access to the University (-ies)
library even for those studying at another Uni (e.g. Leeds) -- at
least for reference, if not for loans? How could it possibly be
arranged?
And lastly, while I'm here, I think I should 're-advertise' the
Chiapas Alert Network (for those who joined the forum in the last
few days and didn't catch Nick Blomley's forward):
http://www.stewards.net/chiapas/10.htm
Certainly worth visiting, and won't take more than 5 mins.
Thanks,
Tom
