Hello Susan,
actually Schroth's Method is known in Europe as 'three-dimensional
Scoliosis Therapy' (other terminology might also apply : the origin is
found in Germany so translating it is tricky... I don't want to invent
new names...). Basically, K. Schroth developped this method on the
simple fact that respiratory and corrective exercises go well together
in scoliosis therapy.
I don't want to simplify her method (there are some good books on the
method, but I am not aware of any being published in English; I could
trace the German titles if you want, can imagine that our very active
collegue Sadil from Wels - Austria - will find that source in a
glimpse...) but roughly speaking : dividing the spinal column in 3 major
blocks (shoulder - costal - low back & pelvis) and analysing their
relative positions in space : in scoliosis patients, one can consider
these blocks as being WEDGE-SHAPED AND THE SPINAL COLUMN BEING ROTATED
(is the consequense also called 'gibbus' in anglo-american countries ? I
mean the bulging of parts of the spinal column). Another sequel is of
course the limited costal mobility and thus the impact on respiratory
function might occur... Schroth's method then tries to educate the
patients in POSTURE CORRECTION THROUGH ENHANCING AND EXPANDING
RESPIRATORY VOLUME AND MECHANICAL COUNTERROTATION OF THE WEDGE-SHAPED
COLUMN-PARTS...
Hope I have helped bringing a little light in this matter, knowing that
this small explanation is good for follow ups.
Keep up the good work in this list
(yes, it is very comfortable to lurk, but that doesn't mean one have to
only 'participate' (?) in this one-direction. Our society does enough
consuming already, howabout some giving....)
Thanks very much, to all those active members that give us so much to
improve communication and share their knowledge amongst PTs, especially,
greetings to Austria, Viktor, appreciate your efforts in bringing
powerfull links and valuable comments on this list !
