I wholeheartedly agree with your views. And I understand the temptation to
want to provide objective criteria for doctors who don't understand the
role of the physiotherapist. I have to confess the car analogy was a bit
of a scam, because it is exactly the way that the doctors would see it.
My experience of medical training is that their views about health care are
entrenched from a very early stage. They have, as we all know, a very
reductioninst idea of treatment. A + B = C.
Given that they have consistantly refused to alter their standpoint other
health professionals have had to accomodate by writing referral criteria
(for instance) in words of one syllable for them. This is not meant as an
insult, just a statement of fact.
Why should physiotherapists objectify their treatment since it plainly
projects a simplified view of what we do. And while I understand the the
need to communicate with doctors (since they are the people referring!) I
don't believe making it easy for them at our expense is the answer. They
need to start meeting us half way.
