21.1. 861, Meinrad (or Meginrat), monk of Reichenau was slain in the dark forest (im
"Finsteren Wald"), where he had lived as hermit by two thieves who had made abuse of
his hospitality. Leaving the eremit's cell, they were however persecuted by two
raven wich lead to their detection. On the site of his hermitage, the abbey of Einsiedeln
was built in the 9.th century. Meinrad is always shown with at least one raven.
