UKOLN is facilitating an eLib briefing/discussion event on RDF, the
Resource Description Framework. We are pleased that the guest speaker will
be Renato Iannella of DSTC (Distributed Systems Technology Centre) in
Australia who is a leading expert on RDF. The meeting will enable you to
find out about RDF and its potential applications. It will include an
introduction to RDF, an outline of some RDF tools, and a panel-led
discussion session.
Date: Friday 8 May
Time: 14.15 - 16.00
Location: Stakis Hotel, Bath
Why is RDF important?
---------------------
RDF is a means for developing tools and applications using a common syntax
for describing web resources. RDF allows interworking applications to
recognise and exchange metadata for web objects.
RDF is seen as a key technology for future development of internet
resource discovery applications in terms of facilitating metadata
management for service providers in areas such as interoperable search
services, low cost metadata creation, innovative visualisation and site
mapping techniques
RDF is based on a data model which is expressed using XML. XML allows
'locally defined' tags to be created. Communities can agree on a set of
tags to indicate content offering the possibility of building services
based on exchanging structured data between applications.
Who should come to the meeting?
-------------------------------
Library and computer staff who have an interest in resource
discovery services, learning environments, standards for metadata
and management of web based resources.
eLib is providing support for the event, so there is no charge for
participation. However space is limited, so please register with Hazel
Gott as soon as possible (see below) and preferably by Friday 1 May. The
event is open to all, although if over-subscribed, priority will be given
to eLib projects.
