Applications are invited for the full-time post of Healthcare
Informatics Officer in the Health Care Libraries Unit, University of
Oxford. The Health Care Libraries Unit (HCLU) co-ordinates and
facilitates resource sharing among member libraries of the Health
Libraries and Information Network (HeLIN), and manages t Library of
the 21st Century programme across the Anglia and Oxford health
region. The Network Support Officer post is funded by Anglia & Oxford
Regional Research and Development Directorate and follows on from the
Internet Project whose aim was to extend nd intensify resource
sharing amongst libraries in the region and improve access to
evidence-based healthcare for both librarians and end-users. To this
end all libraries in acute trusts and health authorities were
connected to the Internet and a program of support and training was
provided. The post holder will take this work one stage further and
build on what has already been achieved by further developing and
maintaining the HeLIN web site and also providing support to the
eCLINIK (Electronic Clinic Immediate Knowledge) Project team in
developing the Project.
We are looking for an information professional
with a degree in computing, information science or librarianship.
Practical experience in writing and managing web sites is essential
and some familiarity with Unix operating systems and small C
programming and/or Unix shell scripts would be an advantage. This
post is full-time.
Based at the Institute of Health Sciences in Oxford
the post involves some travelling within the Anglia and Oxford
Region. A clean driving licence and use of a car would be desirable.
Full travelling expenses are provided. There is a possibility that
support could be provided for further training and/or alifications.
The post is initially funded for 3 years.

Main Duties
1. To develop and manage WWW resources on the Health Care Libraries
Unit server. This will include maintenance and extension of:
+ existing links, resources and locally published material
+ updating databases
+ mailing list
+ ftp service
and the development of new facilities, services and resources.
2. To liaise with librarians in the Health Libraries and Information Network and provide support for new web initiatives at regional and local levels, including:
+ identifying new links and useful sites
+ supporting the work of Special Interest Groups, especially the Regional Training Group
+ introducing new developments in web communication
+ providing a help and enquiry service
+ promoting and publicising the use of the web in healthcare
3. To work with the management team of the eCLINIK Project, especially in the initial stages of development of the Project.
Job Specification
Essential
A degree in information science, librarianship, computing or a
related subject Experience of managing a web site
Knowledge of web technology, including html
Experience of designing and managing information on databases
Ability to communicate orally and in writing
Familiarity with the UNIX operating system to the level of being able to administer the WWW and FTP servers, to configure them appropriately and to be aware of the implications of file permissions
Familiarity with small C programmes and/or Unix shell scripts
Desirable
Some knowledge

+ of database networking and remote access
+ of the healthcare environment
Terms and Conditions
The post is full-time, on a three year fixed-term contract within the salary range u15,159 - u22,785.
The appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical assessment based on a medical-history form, and to a six-month probationary period.
The person appointed has the option of joining the University Employee Pension Scheme, if they wish to do so.
There is an annual leave entitlement of 38 days per year, inclusive of bank holidays.
