Dear Otfried,
I just noticed that I mispelled your name twice on my post! One hundred
thousand apologies!!!
I also want to second your request for better placement statistics in
Italian. I believe that the MLA can give us the numbers for PhD
candidates in the U.S., though these figures reflect, as I mentioned, only
the placement rates of PhD holders in the foreign languages their first
year on the market after completion of the PhD.
The MLA has repeatedly said that the task of collecting placement
statistics on ALL of the candidates on the job market each year would be
an impossible undertaking. Many departments don't stay in touch with
their PhD holders after they get their degree, and tracking all of these
people down would be a major headache for the entire profession.
Still, it seems that we ought to be able to institute a system for
a periodic census, at least amongst ourselves. Any ideas?
Best,
