Dear all
blimey ! (re reply to the question of 'what is a volometer?' given below).
I thoght volometer was simply a container full (up to brim) of water. You plunge the body
part whose volume needs to be known into the container to a known anatomical point,
collecting all the water which spills out as a result. You then measure the volume of 'spilled'
(displaced) water, and hey presto the volume of the body part is known. ("Eureka!" I
believe Archimedes would say.)
Fancy ones made of perspex, from which it is easy to collect displaced water, are
available.)
Am I way off mark here, or is this what a volometer is ?

Hello Herrald,
The Volumeter is a device that consists of a square "window-like"
opening. At two sides are a range of lasers, at the opposite side are
sensors for the lasers. When an arm or leg is put through the window, a
number of lasers is intrupted, which the sensors will perceive. An
interface will give information to your computer that can calculate
which sensors in "horizontal" and "vertical" direction the shape of the
arm or leg. If the arm or leg is pulled through the window in a
standardized speed (useually the extrimity is fixed and the window moved
with a servo) the computer can calculate the volume of different
"slices" of the extremity and thus calculate the total volume. It sounds
very long-winded, but in practice the total measurement is very quick
and accurate. The tool is tested in reliability and validity.
Unfortunately it is very expensive. =
I know JUZO supplies the volumeter, but there are others for sale too. =
