This seems like the neatest solution. The latest versions of
Procite, Papyrus (Mac) and Endnote have this kind of facility
for storing URls, and launching web browsers to view an URL. One
problem is that not all publishers are making it possible to link to
a particular article by a specific URL. I guess we need Digital
Object Identifiers to make this model work [discuss!].
Another problem is that researchers aren't always interested in the
neatest solution, particularly if it doesn't quite work yet. They
are used to keeping files of paper reprints and may feel safer if
they can keep their own copy of a pdf version (pace copyright).
