Dear Paolo,
I have checked my bookmarks again, and it seems that EDMAC (freeware, as it
seems) at the following website could be of interest for Macintosh users:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ucgadkw/edmac.html
EDMAC is a set of macros based on TeX (not LaTeX) and developed for the
production of complex critical editions with up to six levels of apparatus.
It can be used together with Collate, and so I assume (although the webpage
quoted above does not state it explicitly) that it can be run on a
Macintosh machine.
