Julia,
My colleagues in Russian assure me that 'defamiliarization' is the
best way of dealing with this. Most of the dictionaries of literary
terms I've looked at agree. However, since the term has become so
commonplace, perhaps you should come up with something new and
'strange' and shake us all out of our torpor.
