Notification of IBG/RGS 1999:
Social and Cultural Geography Research Group with the Historical Geography
Research Group.
Celtic Geographies: old cultures, new times.
Convened by Christine Milligan and Neil MacInroy (SCGRG) with David Harvey and
Rhy Jones (HGRG).
Celtic roots may be traced to the pre-Roman period in Western Europe, yet on
the eve of the 21st Century we are witnessing a resurgence of interest in
Celtic societies and cultures. This session will examine both historical and
contemporary aspects of the Celtic worlds, ranging from the landscapes and
changing identities associated with premodern modes of societal organisation,
to the place of Celtic geographies in the late twentieth century.
The session aims to explore both contemporary socio-cultural configurations
within and across the Celtic divide, and the extent to which they may be
grounded in the long-term evolution of Celtic societies. In addition, we aim
to explore issues surrounding aspects of the 'new Celticism' and the
implicationsfor local populations within and increasingly global society.
The session aims to consider these aspects through two complementary themes;
one broadly historical and one broadly contemporary:-
1. The historical geographies of the Celtic lands: Celtic landscapes from
prehistory to the present; Celtic senses of identity in the past; the
political and cultural relationship between Celtic peoples and a hegemonic
central power.
2. The social and cultural geographies of the Celtic peoples: Exploring the
concept of Celtic culture; Celtic nationalisms, language and identity; Celtic
arts and sport; the Celtic diaspora; marketing the Celtic heritage and placing
the Celtic regions in a global context.
It is hoped that this session will serve to explore both the historical and
contemporary place of Celtic landscapes and identities at all geographical
scales.
Abstracts of approximately 200 words should be sent to:
