New subject-based interface to Internet resources
24th March is the first anniversary of the start of the new BUBL service,
based at Strathclyde University Library, which recently clocked up 5
million accesses in its first year. To help celebrate this occasion,
we'd like to invite you to try out a new service that we're developing.
It's called BUBL 5:15, and the reason for this name is that whatever
subject you search for, you are guaranteed at least five relevant
matches, and in most cases you'll get no more than 15.
It's not intended as a substitute for Internet searching,
but as a fast, simple and reliable alternative
method for finding information on over 1100 different predefined
subjects, without having to type anything.
The subjects terms are divided into the nine top-level headings
identified by the JISC Committee on Electronic Information, which are
based on HESA subject codes, to which we've added further sections on
library and information science and area studies.
There's a lot more we could say, but it probably makes more sense to
give the URL and invite comments:
http://bubl.ac.uk/link/five/
As the URL suggests, it's partly an expanded subject-based interface to
the BUBL LINK catalogue of Internet resources, but it's also got some
new features:
* Complete A-Z list of all 1100 subjects
* Numerous subject-specific links to other JISC services and
subject gateways
* No broken links. Well, definitely less than 1% broken. We've
checked them all.
* Search results include both title list and resource descriptions on
the same page
* Direct links to at least five useful resources about all 193
countries in the world
* Backup server in case heavy usage slows down searching
In line with standard practice for BUBL LINK, the location and resource
type is given for every item, as well as the author and resource
description. The subject categories are still being refined and the
service is still under development, but we think it's already useful
enough to throw open for wider opinion, on both the general approach and
the subject specifics. Please send any comments to [log in to unmask]
Best wishes
