In 1994 when I was Head of Economics and Business Technology at the
International School Singapore, a small group of HODs examined the
viability of replacing our staff/resource intensive A level programme
[tail wagging dog etc] and replace it with AICE which appeared to be
more of an IB clone than a successor to A level. As such, its apparent
parity with A/S level would seem appropriate. International students
deserve to be assessed in a way which does not penalise them on the
grounds that English is not their first language. Thus it would also
seem inappropriate for UK schools.
Given that admissions officers are quite willing to recognise
differences between A level boards [even though they are not allowed to
discriminate when giving offers] I would have thought UK private sector
students being entered for AICE would raise an eyebrow or two if it were
not as part of a full cohesive programme.
All this having been said, ISS decided against the switch and I have had
nothing further to do with AICE.
