Document type codes

To give the structuralists something to chew on, I submit a list which
emerges from our local project of a combined libary/internet guide (to be
previewed at www.biblio.tu-bs.de/CoOL/ - in German only, but "CoOL"
meaning "Catalog of Object Links")
This list builds on "official" vocabulary: LCSH form subdivision terms,
Unimarc/USMARC form codes, all German subject form subheadings (RSWK) and
German MAB codes, plus codes used in the Pica communities. This opens up
the possibility of "harvesting" and converting from these massive sources.
The result is one unified list of English and German terms. The + indicates
that the term is "official" in that it is contained in the subject headings
authority listings (English: LCSH, German: RSWK).
Due to their origin, the terms are biased towards paper publications.
Other terms have thus been added because we felt a need for them in
our project. The total number of codes is 213.
We classified the terms in a hierarchical fashion, attributing 3-digit
numbers. If you sort the list on these numbers, you get the idea.
(Do I need to point out that number codes have the nice feature of being
language-neutral?)
Potentially, this may be used to define three levels of detail for
resource type classification.
The top level is this list of broad categories:

1 Genuine Internet specific resources
2 Reference resources
3 Text resources
4 Laws, rules, standards, etc.
5 Institutions, Industry
6 Society and politics
7 Multimedia resources, sound and image
8 Geospatial
9 Statistics, numerical data resources
The list can be sorted on any of the columns to produce different views
(therefore, all terms are in small letters, even the German ones).
