Having left the RGS/IBG, although not in the group exodus, I have
found myself somewhat out of place. The idea of a critical forum
which is more than an occasional international meeting - which after
all some/many of us can't/couldn't afford to attend - is very appealing. I
do think that something more substantial, although not institutionalised,
would be a positive way forward. But the question of being bothered
does raise its ugly head.
I did attend the recent meeting at Guildford and to be quite honest
found it a rather soulless experience. While I am in general sympathy with
Adam's position on the research groups (as they are, and for me did, prove
useful as a step into wider academic arenas) I am not sure how being
submerged within the RGS can help academic/critical geography move forward.
I don't know whether I'm just in a state of post-post modern decline
but I did feel as if something was missing at Guildford and I left
with a sense of deja vous or was it of metastasis?
Anyway I prefer lurking so bye for now
