Dear all
Dave Storey's message raised a number of issues that I recall being
raised during the last Gulf War, particularly the
inconsistency of US/UK/UN policy vis a vis the likes of Israel and
Indonesia. Aside from the specificities of the current crisis, is
there a case for the use of force in any 'ethical' foreign policy?
Would we, as good consistent critical types, use force against all
nasty regimes the world over if only we had power? If not, what
would we do other than adopt relatively passive measures such as stopping
arms sales which might be too late already?
I do not have an answer to this myself and must confess to a degree
of confusion. I loath the thought of force but can find no viable
alternative were I in the position of having to deal with these governments.
