To all;
There is a new M.Sc programme entitled: Cosmopolitan Development Planning.
It will commence in September 1998 at the Development Planning Unit,
University College, London. The course was recently approved by the UCL
Administration.
The course is innovative as it combines issues of urban planning and
cultural studies. It examines often strongly contested ideas and practices
which are essential in understanding and promoting cultural relations and
cosmopolitan coexistence in the city. It is designed to equip participants
with tools of analysis and practical techniques to effect appropriate urban
policy and planning, as well as community level action. The course is
multi-disciplinary, assessing issues of competition and conflict over
resources and cultural identity. This analysis will focus on the emergences
of socio-economic, political, spatial, historical and cultural cleavages
within `divided cities', affected by the contemporary process of globalisation.
The course is designed for particiapants from a wide range of disciplines
and professions who have an involvement with, or a serious interest in the
situations and issues of socio-economic processes and cultural relations in
a variety of urban situations. In the past the DPU allows for a range of
special interests to be pursued by participants from staff and students from
academic institutions and policy research centres, community
organisations, international agencies, NGOs, and city governments.
The DPU, is a centre which attracts students and staff from throughout the
world; offerring a truly international enviroment. The staff has been
working on issues of urban planning, theory and practice, urban economics
and management, gender planning, globalisation and spatial issues, for
more than twenty five years.
