Ironically this argument mirrors one rationale behind the
subject gateways, viz. "Less is More". A subject gateway with 2000
resources is mroe useful than a search engine with 2 million pages.
Similarly an institutional gateway with 200 tightly-focused resources
may in some cases be more useful than a natioanl gateway with 2000
resources. Perhaps it would be more helpful to think of
institutional gateways as more akin to selective reading lists rather
than comprehensive catalogues.
I don't think institutional gateways will go away. It would be
useful to explore ways to integrate them more with national gateways.
