Greetings,
I work as an urbanist in the Graduate School of Public and
Development Management, University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg
and also am the Senior Researcher with the Coalition for the
Development of Urban Africa in Dakar--a region wide research and
advocacy network of local urban development organizations attempting
to shape new spaces of intersectoral negotiation and collaboration.
My work has focused on the configuration of new modalities of social
affiliation, economy and subjectivity as African urbanity is
dispersed and reassembled. Comcomitanly, I have looked at the
constitution of urban-based identity discourses, particularly those
of political Islam and the "formalization" of civil institutions. I
also participate in a variety of small experimentations in several
African cities to generate research and political instruments which
address the plurality of "development" trajectories--i.e., the
conjunction of vast resourcefulness and vitality which informs local
practices of city-making and the intensified impenetrability and
fragmentation of African urban spaces.
