A CALL FOR STORIES ABOUT PEACEMAKERS

We are currently searching for stories about individual acts of heroism in
the interest of peace. These individuals and their attempts to resolve
conflicts will be presented in our television documentary, THE WOUNDED
DOVE. The heroic peace endeavors they performed may be successes or
failures. What is important is that, in one way or another, they tried to
put an end to violence. The conflict can range from a world war to a minor
internal incident in a remote corner of the world long forgotten in 20th
century history. The peacemaker may be a famous personality or an unknown
and unheralded person who stepped out of an ordinary life and tried to
make a difference.

The key attribute in choosing these individuals and their stories is
whether or not a person, be it a man, woman or child, took an initiative
and risked their reputation, fortune or life in the pursuit of peace.
Those who stood on the street corner and preached against war, protested
publicly or signed petitions are to be admired as well. But this
documentary is focused on those who took a risk and made an active effort
to stop or prevent violent conflict.

Because we have the rare opportunity to reach a wide, international
audience, we have to place the emphasis on the dramatic individual stories
through which broad themes can emerge. Please bear in mind that what we
have discovered during our own research is if the "story" of an individual
can start off with, "One day…" and then end with a conclusion which will
surprise, astound or even amuse the viewer. Though rather simplistic,
this “one day” helps to focus on one particular aspect, act, deed, etc.,
this person accomplished or tried to accomplish. Biographical and
background material, though compressed, would be introduced at the
beginning to set the viewers up as to who this person was and then at the
end to let them know what happened to them.

THE WOUNDED DOVE The Quest for Peace in the 20th Century is scheduled for
broadcast before the Millennium in the U.S., Canada and a number of
European countries. We welcome any stories or ideas for stories as well
as information concerning the existence and availability of visual support
material.

PROJECT SYNOPSIS:

Peace has been an elusive commodity in the 20th century. Over 100 million
people have perished in violent conflicts during these past one hundred
years. But even in the darkest moments, the quest for peace has been kept
alive by men and women who committed themselves, and risked their lives in
the belief that men can co-exist without resorting to violence..
Regrettably, most of their efforts failed, but their spirit endures.

THE WOUNDED DOVE documents the struggle of these peacemakers. Many of
their initiatives are little known attempts to end conflicts, and many of
the conflicts themselves have all but disappeared into history's
footnotes. But wherever war or civil strife have broken out, individuals
have bravely stepped forward and sought to put an end to force of arms as
a means to resolve human disputes.

THE WOUNDED DOVE looks not at those who won or lost the wars, but at those
who have tried to revive and nurture the phoenix of peace.

OBJECT: What PEACE ENDEAVORS occurred before or during the course of the
conflict. A PEACE ENDEAVOR is defined as an act intended to resolve or
prevent a conflict on either a small or large scale. It need not be
successful, in fact, most PEACE ENDEAVORS of the century have been
failures. For the purposes of this project, with few exceptions,
activities such as making speeches, leading peace rallies and writing
tracts do not qualify for inclusion. PEACE ENDEAVORS are interesting,
specific, overt acts, by individuals, who, in one way or another, put
their lives and/or fortunes at risk to prevent armed conflict. A PEACE
ENDEAVOR must be capable of being related as a story, with a beginning,
middle and end, and should tap the universal nature of the human spirit.
