Couple of points here - they/you/both should have discussed this prior
to the work being done. I always check with my clients if it is
acceptable for me to a)put a link from their site to mine and b)list
them as a client.
If you don't want the link, you should check your contract to see if it
was specified or not; its also worth checking to make sure that you own
the copyright on your web pages. Consequently, you may find that you can
simply delete the link if you don't want it, or you may not be allowed
to under the terms of your contract.
On policy issues, I suppose you may want to include a disclaimer on your
site that links to other sites does not necessarily imply endorsement of
such sites/companies/etc and that you have no control over the content
of any such sites.
As for anything else - I wouldn't regard it as a problem, to be honest.
Most websites give some sort of indication as to who wrote their pages,
so you're not going to look unusual in that respect.
