`MOBILITY FOR OLDER & DISABLED PEOPLE: DEVELOPING A RESEARCH AGENDA'
FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER 1998, STAKIS GROSVENOR HOTEL, EDINBURGH
The seminar aims to stimulate interaction between organisations concerned
with the mobility and accessibility needs of older and disabled people,
with the clear objective of developing a research agenda. The recent UK
and Scottish White Papers on Integrated Transport, as well as the EC's
forthcoming 5th Framework Programme, have highlighted the need for the
development of a transport and accessibility strategy enabling all members
of society to participate actively and to move freely.
In order to achieve this goal, serious efforts to determine how best to
develop a "transport strategy for all" will have to be made. The Transport
Research Institute strives to develop a multi-agency approach to this topic
by fostering consultation with a wide group of stakeholders and encouraging
and co-ordinating collaboration across different research areas.
To this end, the seminar will focus on three main areas requiring research:
· driving and the older population
· public transport issues
· pedestrian/way finding problems in the built environment
These topics will be discussed during the morning plenary sessions by
speakers offering different points of view on the problems faced by the
older and disabled population. Invited speakers include professionals with
a research background, transport co-ordinators from government departments,
transport providers and end-users.
The afternoon will give participants the chance to discuss their particular
area of interest in parallel discussion groups. During the feedback
session, participants from "research funding" organisations will also give
a short overview of their perspective.
The programme is outlined below.
The workshop is being organised jointly by the Transport Research Institute
and AgeNet.
AgeNet is an initiative sponsored and funded by the Medical Research
Council, BUPA, Research into Ageing, SmithKline Beecham and Westminster
Health Care, and also receives funding from the Government's Foresight
Challenge. Its mission is to foster new research partnerships which will
address the problems experienced by an ageing population, with the
intention of improving the quality of life of older people.
The Transport Research Institute was set up by Napier University in 1996 as
a multidisciplinary and university-wide research centre. Its aims are to
develop in Scotland a research institute renowned worldwide for the quality
and breadth of its work in transport and related issues.
