Research for Clear Zones
A Seminar on 16 December 1998
at the DTI Conference Centre
 1 Victoria Street, London SW1

Clear Zones is a national Foresight initiative, supported by the DETR
and DTI and a wide range of partners in local authorities, industry,
academia, professional and voluntary sectors. The aim of Clear Zones
is to reduce pollution and traffic in urban areas and enhance export
opportunities by developing relevant technologies and techniques
through cross-sector partnerships. Cities such as Winchester,
Nottingham and Camden have designated Clear Zones within which they
are applying these principles. Other cities are engaged in balancing
the promotion of economic vitality and accessibility with quality of
life, clean air and a safe environment, using a variety of management
techniques.

Clear Zones, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
and the Local Authority Research Council Initiative (LARCI) are
promoting a seminar to:

- discuss research requirements for the implementation of Clear
 Zones;

- encourage partnerships, especially between local authorities and
 academic institutions, to carry out  relevant and useful research;
 and

- explore the requirements for the support of future Clear Zones
 research projects.

There will be presentations on these topics from researchers in the
field, an introduction from the Chair of Clear Zones, Chris Freegard,
Director of Development at Plymouth City Council and a presentation on
the policy context from DETR. There will be brief talks from academics
followed by discussion on key relevant topics.

- Urban transport interchanges and ITS: smoothing the switch from
interurban to urban and between urban modes, integrating requirements
such as urban traffic control and passenger information.

- Reducing demand for travel: how technical development can meet
work/ shopping/other demands with less travel; how does teleworking
affect travel demand, and what are the most effective approaches to
 home delivery of goods?

- Enhancing sustainable modes: supporting pedestrian gateways and
movement, personal security for pedestrians, management of
 pedestrian/cycle/bus/tram/conflict and interaction.

An audience of about 60 people will debate the priorities for future
research. Urban local authorities, researchers, government and
research council personnel with interests in these areas are invited
to attend. A draft programme is attached.

There will be no charge for attendance but numbers are limited so
please book early by completing the attached form, or contact Viv
Dipper on 01793 444090.
