DACCORD Workshop on Advanced Motorway Traffic Control
-----------------------------------------------------

Dynamic management of traffic systems, especially motorways, is perhaps
the only realistic way to ameliorate congestion on overcrowded
motorways.

The DACCORD Workshop on Advanced Motorway Traffic Control will
take place on ***Friday 11th December 1998***,
at Lancaster University, UK.

For more information visit the web pages:

   http://cres1.lancs.ac.uk/daccord/

The workshop is aimed at research workers in industry and academia from
the fields of transport engineering, control and management.

-------------
Workshop aims
-------------

(1) To promote interest in urban and interurban traffic control.

(2) To report the results from European and non-European
    projects currently underway.

(3) To address various advanced technical issues in motorway traffic
control, including ramp metering, motorway-to-motorway control,
variable speed signs and route guidance.

----------------------
Papers to be presented
----------------------

(1) Routing control of motorway networks, J.H. van Schuppen
(Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatatica (CWI), Amsterdam),
A.G. Steenbeek and P.R. de Waal.

(2) A synthetic study of the network effects of ramp metering, Frans
Middelham (Transport Research Centre (AVV), Amsterdam).

(3) A non-minimal state space approach to co-ordinated ramp
metering, C.J. Taylor, P.C. Young, A. Chotai and J. Whittaker
    (Lancaster University).

(4) AMOC: A generic tool for integrated control of motorway traffic
networks, A Kotsialos, M. Papageorgiou, (Technical

(5) Integrated urban/interurban traffic control: The IN-TUC strategy
and its application in Glasgow, C. Diakaki ), M. Papageorgiou
(Technical University of Crete) and T. McLean (Strathclyde
    Regional Council).

(6) Use of MITSIM microscopic traffic simulation laboratory as an
evaluation tool for freeway (motorway) control strategies, M.
Ben-Akiva (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA).

(7) OASIS: A generic tool for network-wide co-ordinated ramp metering
and motorway to motorway control : Results of simulation studies
on the Ile de France network, H. Haj-Salem (Inst. National de
Rech. sur les Transport et leur Securite (INRETS), Paris) and
    M. Mangeas.

(8) The development of an open architecture for interurban traffic
management, Jan Blonk (TNO Institute for Applied Physics, Delft)
and Victor Avontuur (Transport Research Centre (AVV), Amsterdam).

(9) Yorgos Stephanedes. Title to be confirmed.

(10) Results of HANNIBAL Sestriere '97 Demonstrator, Eugenio Morello
     (CSST, Torino).

------------
Registration
------------

There is a nominal registration fee of 25 pounds payable to Lancaster
University, which includes lunch and a copy of the proceedings. To
register, please email (mailto: [log in to unmask] ) or write to
Dr. James Taylor at the Centre for Research on Environmental Systems
and Statistics, Lancaster University, LA1 4YQ, United Kingdom.

-------------------
The DACCORD project
-------------------

DACCORD is an acronym for the Development and Application of
Co-ordinated Control of Corridors. The project participates in the
Transport Sector of the Telematics Applications Programme, which is
carried out for the European Commission. Further information may be
found on the World Wide Web pages of Hague Consulting Group, the
project co-ordinator (http://www.hcg.nl).

The main objective of the DACCORD project is to design, implement and
validate a practical Dynamic Traffic Management System (DTMS) for
integrated and co-ordinated control of interurban motorway corridors.
An additional objective is to further develop an open system
architecture for interurban traffic management. The project includes
validation, demonstration and evaluation at three test sites: the ring
road around Amsterdam and surrounding region; the ring road around
Paris and connecting motorways; and the Brescia-Venice motorway.

------------
The Workshop
------------

The present workshop follows on from the highly successful
DACCORD workshop on short term forecasting held in February
1998. It will consist of 10 presentations, including several papers by
members of the DACCORD consortium. The workshop, which will
take place on Friday 11th December 1998, is being hosted by the
Centre for Research on Environmental Systems and Statistics
(CRES) at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. Further
information about the workshop venue and surrounding area can be
found from the Lancaster University home page
(http://www.lancs.ac.uk).

The workshop program committee is as follows

(1) Eric Kroes (Hague Consulting Group, The Netherlands)
(2) Frans Middelham (AVV, The Netherlands)
(3) Habib Hadj Salem (INRETS, France)
(4) Jan van Schuppen (CWI, The Netherlands)
(5) Markos Papageorgiou (Technical University of Crete, Greece)
(6) Peter Young (Lancaster University, United Kingdom).
