Providing that you have good grey/white/csf contrast in your T1 images,
homogenous image intensity, and that the template does not look too
dis-similar to your T1 images, it should work (the evaluation of the method
in Ashburner & Friston 1997, NeuroImage 6(3):209-217 was done using
images that broke some of these assumptions, and it still didn't do so
badly). However, it should work just slightly better if you have a template
with the same contrast as your images.
