ABSTRACT:
Internet/Intranet Spectroscopic Data Standards - safe into the
next millennium

The rapid development of computer technology and new
working strategies has opened
new ways of working for the analytical spectroscopist. For
many years the inability of
spectrometer manufacturers to keep up with innovations in
computing meant that
spectroscopists suffered from severe problems in moving
data from the often excellent
analytical instruments to their workplace.
With the publication of the JCAMP-DX standard for infrared
spectroscopy in 1988 and
the successive addition of standards for Chemical
Structures in 1991, nuclear magnetic
resonance spectroscopy in 1993 and mass spectrometry in
1994 a tool has been made
available which has allowed for platform independent,
operating system independent
data transfer.
The support and extension of these standards has now
transferred to IUPAC and
protocols for Ion Mobility Spectrometry and for
multi-dimensional NMR data sets are
currently under development.
The open nature and simplicity of the standards makes them
pre-destined for
implementation in systems where the longevity of the data
must be guaranteed.
The ability to annotate the data sets without infringing
the standard along with the
possibility of adding locally relevant information in the
form of 'private records' offers
itself to data mining and knowledge engineering
strategies.
