Dear colleagues,
Along with season's greetings I extend a reminder that proposals for papers
to be read at the Sixth International Scott Conference, SCOTT, SCOTLAND AND
ROMANTICISM, are due by JANUARY 31st at the address below. The proposals and
inquiries I've received so far promise a rich and diversified programme.
The Conference will take place at the University of Oregon, 21-25 July 1995.
A range of events, festive as well as scholarly, will supplement the formal
paper-reading sessions. Plenary lectures will be given by Robert Crawford
(University of St Andrew's), Susan Manning (Cambridge), Jerome McGann
(Virginia) and Alexander Welsh (Yale). Other keynote speakers will lead a
series of workshops and seminars, "Contexts": so far these include Marshall
Brown (Washington), on Scott and European Romantic novel criticism; James
Buzard (M.I.T.) on the novel, ethnography and the invention of culture; Mary
Favret (Indiana), on Enlightenment and Romantic representations of violence;
Deidre Lynch (SUNY Buffalo), on the fiction of everyday life, OR, the
library, Gothic, gender and national identity. A series of roundtable
discussions / symposia will examine issues in current scholarship. Forum
topics proposed so far include: Editing and the Romantic Canon; Nationality,
Nationalism and Culture; Romantic Historicism.
Proposals are invited for individual 25-minute papers (1-page abstract) or
sessions consisting of 2-3 papers (2-3 pp.), addressing any aspect of
Scott's work, life, reputation, influence, etc., and / or related topics in
Romantic-era Scottish literature and culture.
