Transportation Research Institute
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Director of
the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), a
freestanding multidisciplinary, research unit, reporting directly to the
Vice President for Research.
UMTRI, established in December 1965, currently has seven divisions:
Biosciences Division, Engineering Research Division, Human Factors
Division, Marine Systems Division, Office for the Study of Automotive
Transportation, Social and Behavioral Analysis, and Survey Analysis. In
addition, UMTRI is the administrative home of the Great Lakes Center for
Truck and Transit Research; one of ten regional University Transportation
Centers funded by the federal government. There are four support groups
that provide services to all the research divisions. These are the
Research Information and Publications Center, which houses the UMTRI
library; the Transportation Data Center administered through the Survey and
Analysis Division; the Graphic Arts Unit; and the Business Office.
Currently, research expenditures exceed 13 million dollars annually.
The director will be expected to provide leadership and administration for
a primary research staff of 35 scientists and 130 full time support staff;
lead exploration of new research directions; and strengthen interactions
with academic units of the University and with the industrial and
governmental sectors regarding transportation problems and issues.
The position is envisioned to involve a tenured appointment with an
academic unit. The appointment of Director of UMTRI will be for a
five-year renewable term.

1. Leadership and breadth of vision
2. Academic credentials commensurate with those expected of a senior-level
faculty member
3. Expertise in transportation
4. Successful administrative experience in large scale research activities
5. Ability to work effectively with the sponsor community
(both industry and government)
6. Capacity to generate external support for personal research activities
