the INSTITUTE OF RAILWAY STUDIES and The RAILWAY & CANAL
HISTORICAL SOCIETY
joint conference on
CO-OPERATION AND COMPETITION: THE HISTORY OF THE
RAILWAY'S RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER TRANSPORT MODES
29-31 OCTOBER 1999
NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM, YORK, UK
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
Recent research has suggested that even in those countries with
well-developed
railway networks, other modes of transport remained important for social
and
economic wellbeing. Yet the competitive and co-operative relationships
between railways and these other modes have rarely been analysed,
whether
the period of study is that of the railways' dominance or of their
decline.
We invite proposals for papers which explore these themes in a
historical
context for any period and country. Comparative studies are particularly
welcome. Offers of papers should include a 200 word summary. Please send
them to [log in to unmask] before 31 December 1998.
We anticipate that the time allocated for papers will not exceed 30
minutes
each. Proposals for shorter papers are welcome.
Members of The Railway & Canal Historical Society will receive further
news
about the conference through the Society. Non-members should register
their
interest at [log in to unmask] Further announcements will also be
posted on the railway-studies list.
