Good old Alan. Glad he remembers us oldies.
Personal rates etc are best discussed privately. But as this is an issue
that brings together the PUSET mob and the science writers, I will flag up a
major issue that exercises lots of people. (I'm a member of the don't give a
f**k school.) And that is electronic rights.
If I write for the Financial Times, as I do from time to time, interesting
piece in the works on electronic lab notebooks, they expect to use my
material on the web without paying me an extra bean. Same at The Guardian
and just about everywhere else.
As far as I know the only people who have done anything to recompense
writers is New Scientist. There was a small recognition of the use of
e-rights 10 years or so ago, when the magazine was edited by some dead beat
or other and when no one had heard of the internet. Now, though, the
magazine pays more than anyone else around, partly because of the need to
buy electronic rights.
As far as I know neither Nature nor Science have done likewise.
One thing that everyone seems to agree on is that there is no reason why
on-line only publications should pay less than print media. The going rate
there is between £200 and £500 per 1000 words.

Come to the party and you might pick up a review copy.
One of the things we are doing on support from OST and the research councils
is build a website for UK SET called Science City. We are looking for
freelance science writers to write a popular 200 word plus graphics summary
of each new award coming from the councils from some point to be determined
next year. Alan Gomersall suggested your name in this context. Would you be
prepared to participate/ what sort of rate do you think we should pay/how
would we best identify others - through ABSW?
