We set one up at the beginning of this year at Salford. One big bonus was
the appointment last year of an admin officer for graduate studies who has
played a big role in coordinating pg affairs across the university (both
academic and social). We have received monies from the Research and
Graduate College here to help subsidize the PG Soc.

Unfortunately the Students Union have been less than helpful. Despite the
fact that we have attracted 120 members in our first year, they have given
us a budget of £25 for the year, which means that after deduction of the
VAT we had to pay on the membership fees (we charged £2 per member) we have
actually lost money. Furthermore, they are now refusing to let us spend
the money in our account (our own membership money) because the activities
we have been holding have been primarily social.

The major advantage though is that we now have a forum through which we can
complain about:
the fact that we have no PG rep in the SU;
the fact that our union does not pay affiliation to the NPC, but leaves it
to the Research and Graduate College;
all the other usual PG gripes.

And we do intend to complain.

As regards getting people interested, we tried midway through last year to
set up some sort of PG evening and it just didn't work, despite publicity
throughout the Uni. This year we targeted them at registration and
induction and by means of the email list which our new admin officer has
set up. Basically all literature that went out to PG's from the Research
and Graduate College had something about the PG Soc attached to it. It has
worked very well and should be easier in other years.

k.
