Dear Craig and Cameron,
Just because there is nothing on Podiatry and benchmarking on Medline
doesn't mean that it isn't occuring. Most Public Sector Podiatrists in
Victoria have key Performance Indicators which have measuable
outcomes. eg. Response rate to inpatient refferals, waiting time for
initial appiontment etc. Also with the increase of competitive
neutrality/tendering the service cost base can also be benchmarked
against institutions of similar size and activity. I know that these
are not benching marking the outcomes of podiatric care, but the
National Reference Standards for Allied Health only officially come
into force on 1 July 98 (available from
http://xray.anu.edu.au/casemix). This will be the first time we are
all calling a specific podiatric intervention the same thing. WRT
outcome, the federal DH&FS Health outcome branch has recently provided
the National Allied Health Casemix Committee with $300,000 to develop
indications for interventions and link these to outcome measures. This
will then allow better comparison and benchmarking.
Locally the Inner and Eastern Healthcare Network Podiatrists are
looking at areas that can be benchmarked between the individual
network hospitals.

Dear all,
My understanding of the term 'benchmarking' is that it a method of
asessing and evaluating whether EBHC is talking place. In other
words, are you applying the rigour of EBHC in the work place.
I have never seen any reference to examples of this practice in published
podiatry journals.
I would welcome development of a specific benchmarking tool once
there is sufficient evidence (RCT/ critical reviews etc) of EB
podiatry practice.
Er.... aren't we back to the lack of fundamental research in
podiatry on which to base EBPP?
Best wishes,
Rob
