This morning so far I have collected data on seven different therapeutic
shoes (rockers etc) on only one subject (took me three hours). I now have
infront of me two solid days of analysis purely for this subject, and I have
a sample of 30 subjects...... No drug reps come to take me out to lunch or
give me cute things for my desk, or T-shirts etc, let alone send me to nice
places to talk to nice people. No glamour in this sort of research......If I
didn't think that clinicians would value the final results, I couldn't face
another analysis session.

As for why I do this, instead of treating patients or teaching undergrads? I
have no idea except I remember ten years worth of doing 'podiatric
biomechanics' on patients and not being able to look a patient in the eye
and say "Do this therapy, and you WILL be painfree". Currently there is
nothing more satisfying to me than finishing the analysis and letting my
mind fly with all the new questions to investigate....someone once told me
that research in podiatry was like the quest for the Holy Grail, and each
study I do gives me another part of the map.
Norman, once I'm back on the beer we should ponder on this, I'm sure Graham
will help us too.
Cheers,
Susan
