The current problems at the National Coal Mining Museum are probably the
result of last years major underground collapse which curtailed underground
tours, with a consequent fall in income. Without the underground experience
such a museum could not hope to be self-financing and I would presume the
grant is targeted on the restoration of those facilities lost in the collapse.
Whilst a 'show' mines ares theoretically a working mines, HM Inspectors do
use discretion in their regulation. But collapses of ground are dangerous in
anybodys book.
