Dear List-Members,
As it is apparent that enquiries about specific UK
collieries can stimulate extensive replies from members, I
am hoping that the list can help with some family history
for my late wife's family. Her great-grandfather,
James Fairbairn, after being orphaned in 1845, was taken in
by relatives, several members of whose family worked as
miners at Barmoor (or Bar Moor) pit, Lowick,
Northumberland, just about the most northerly pit in
England. If any body can point me in the best direction to
find out more about this mine I would be most grateful. It
would be pleasing if any records were located somewhat
closer to Oxford than the record office in Berwick.
Another point of information that may be relevant is that,
before her marriage, James's wife was a servant in the
house of one Charles Salsbury of London , listed in the
1861 census as "mineralist and farmer" and resident close
to the mine.
Yours,
